 Geographically
Ohio County is the 5th largest county in Kentucky
covering a total of 596 square miles with a current
population over 23,000. There are six (6)
incorporated cities. The largest city is Beaver Dam
and the county seat is Hartford. The other
incorporated cities are; Centertown, Fordsville,
McHenry, and Rockport.
Little known facts:
Bill Monroe, the father of Bluegrass Music, was
born on September 13, 1911 and raised in Rosine,
Kentucky located in Ohio County. He is known as the
“Father of Bluegrass Music” . He performed for four
presidents, was a Grammy winner and is the only
performer to be inducted into the Country Music Hall
of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the
International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of
Fame. He died on September 9, 1996. He is interred
in the Rosine Cemetery. His home place has been
restored and is open for tours by the public.
Since 1902 the Dundee Goat, the lone survivor of
three weathervanes from 1890’s Dundee Scotland, has
perched atop the 80’ steeple of the Masonic Lodge.
The town used to be known as Hines Mill but was
renamed for Dundee Scotland. The weathervane is
hollow and made of zinc, it weighs about ten pounds
and is featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
While prospecting for coal in 1872 a complete human
skeleton was found measuring over ten feet tall. The
giants arm measured 22” from wrist to elbow and his
leg measured 42” from hip to knee.
